only half of the floor area is actually used for passengers, the rest is cabs, mail compartment (with transmission, unusable for pax) and engine compartment (yes, the engine is above the floor), the engine is relatively powerful, but the transmission is poor and not electric so only one bogie is powered, so it's not particularly good at hauling extra cars anyway

this thing should have been scrapped in like the 80's at latest (how old are these things? well, older, obviously, i am not telling)

@pony I think it was intended to be a stopgap car, like "get these on mass before ČKD figures out a diesel electric propulsion small enough to fit into a motor car", and I think they never came up with that, even 842 is diesel hydraulic

@pony Also the way it's designed there's only a pass through to the next carriage on the end without an engine, so in standard configuration the motor car is pulling most of its own weight + the weight of the carriages. I think it would be better if it would push itself and pull the carriages, but maybe it doesn't matter that much? I don't understand kinetics

@instereo256 the intended configuration was basically two motor carriages with 4-5 carriages in-between, it doesn't generally matter where the power is located, there are some minor advantages when it's not the first bogie (if only one is powered), but not very huge, ultimately it's powered to unpowered weight that matters

i mean, it's hopelessly obsolete in all aspects, people complain about about the old DB 628 that arriva is importing in dozens, but at similar power to weight ratio, they offer more seats, to provide same capacity, class 854 needs two carriages and then its performance is much worse
