hot take: ubuntu is the manjaro of debian
if you're looking for "debian but easier", this ain't it; debian already has an installer, stable branches, and everything you'd expect from ubuntu, so I'd just recommend going straight to the source
if you're looking more generally for a "beginner-friendly" distro, to be honest I'm not sure there is a good answer to that question

if you just want to use your computer and aren't interested in tinkering, I'm afraid linux might not be for you
I don't mean this in a gatekeepy way, but rather that linux requires technical knowledge and work to maintain properly, and so far no distro has managed to solve that (but immutable distros are moving in the right direction)

if you
are willing to put in the effort, then in my opinion, seemingly "friendly" distros will only slow you down in your learning process, because they hide the technical aspects, and are no better than windows in that regard
diy-type distros such as arch are much better teachers, because they encourage you to get your hands dirty
their learning curve is far steeper, but if you're technically-inclined, then you shouldn't face too much trouble
on that front, debian may be good if you're experienced, but because they modify the software they distribute so much, it might be a little weird and I would generally recommend learning to use the upstream versions before you specialize in a specific distro

of course, all of this is entirely subjective, but having over a decade of experience with linux this is my advice to anyone who's interested in it
don't be afraid to experiment, mess around in VMs if you have to, try out several distros if you're unsure which one to choose, and most importantly, have a good time

@jeder I agree, but this isn't really what the post is about :P
ubuntu takes debian and makes it even worse, and then I went off on something else entirely
but yeah if you actually like ubuntu or any of its derivatives, just use debian, there is no good reason not to

@novenary i think ubuntu is actually debian but better, like, it's still cursed, but not having to deal with 50-year-old packages is a big plus

@jeder to clarify what I mean by "ubuntu is the manjaro of debian", the thing is that you can't really improve debian
anything downstream distros do goes directly against the philosophy of debian

it's the second oldest distro that's still around, it's built and maintained by neckbeards, LTS is their holy grail and they love to patch the shit out of their packages

ubuntu only addresses surface-level problems with it, without really fixing the core issues (which, again, would make it extremely not debian)
and they're doing a shit job of it, on top of canonical generally being a shitty company

this is in the same way that manjaro doesn't "get" the arch philosophy, and yet they only make surface-level changes for little benefit while butchering everything in the process (but this is exacerbated by the fact that they are incompetent monkeys with typewriters)

if you don't like that debian packages are too old, just use another distro imo

@novenary "if you don't like that debian packages are too old, just use another distro imo"
only if vps providers found out that there are different distros than ubuntu, debian, and rhel cl๐Ÿคฎnes

@jeder yeah that sucks, but like, a lot of my friends use fedora and it seems pretty good for one of the mainstream distros
otherwise there are ways around this, even if they're annoying you usually only have to deal with them once to install your preferred distro

@jeder yeah hetzner is nice on that front, they have images for pretty much everything, even arch
(yes I run arch on a prod server and yes I want to get rid of it :P)
