distros you should avoid:
debian - most likely out of date on arrival, "lts" is not a given despite whatever everyone says
manjaro - arch linux but with many drawbacks of ubuntu and also will break randomly
anything gnu endorsed - gnu is always wrong so it's safe to assume they don't know their shit
ubuntu - manjaro but with snaps and debian based, bad

honorable mention:

anything with linux-libre (also most likely gnu endorsed) - absolute larp for no benefit, but hey, at least their users are even more repugnant and toxic than normal linux users

it'd be like calling alpine a debian fork because they're both linux

It's a Nix fork, but the system itself is completely different (for starters, they use a custom init system instead of systemd)

@chayleaf @jeder fun fact about the init, shepherd: it used to be called dmd (daemon-managing daemon), but then they found it clashes with dmd (digital mars D compiler), so they changed the name, which is the first and last time in history D has been relevant
