Samsungโ€™s Super Fast Charging relies on a USB Power Delivery (PD) specification called PPS. Unlike proprietary fast charging tech, like the Warp Charging in OnePlus devices, PPS is open for any manufacturer to use, but only Samsung seems to be using it widely.
Many USB-C Power Delivery chargers, however, donโ€™t include PPS support, limiting their effectiveness when combined with Galaxy phones. And since Galaxy buyers arenโ€™t getting chargers in the box anymore, accessory makers like Anker can opportunistically swoop in with an offer for buyers needing a new wall wart.

@jeder they can't force you to do anything, it still works, it just won't charge as fast
(and as someone who has boring 18W fast charging, who gives a shit, that's plenty fast already)

@novenary yes but the whole selling point of usb pd is that you would have blanket support for fast charging on everything that does usb pd, while samsung does this shit, that is supporting some specific set that no one else supports

great to know that samsung found out a way to make everyone still buy a new charger but still be theoretically within usb pd specs
god fucking damn i hate this company

@jeder I disagree here, blame manufacturers for not implementing the spec lmao

@novenary @jeder I think there shouldn't be multiple specs for USB PD, there should be just one

@RafiX @novenary @jeder I read that it's compatible with PD, it's not some secret trick to make you buy a charger. You can just get even better performance with the latest greatest charger

@piggo @jeder @RafiX yeah also it's not like you fall back to slow 5V 2A charging without it afaik? you just don't get the ludicrous 120W charging you see in phones these days, and like I said: who cares

@novenary @piggo @RafiX it's not the ludicrous 120w, but 25w

@RafiX @jeder yeah as if the USB IF will ever do that lmao

either way PPS is just a protocol that lets a device request an arbitrary voltage instead of being stuck with the presets from the spec (that should have been the only mode from the start imo)

because all power sources already have to support several different voltages, it makes no difference to the hardware design, it's literally just a firmware feature that's missing because hardware vendors suck
