after downloading the GPL licensed code bundle I found the factory firmware is based on openwrt

new failure mode unlocked

preciously IPv6 was on but the router wasn't sending router advertisements

disabling IPv6 resulted in:
- no IPv4 DHCP
- IPv6 router advertisements

manually assigned an IPv4 address and turn IPv6 back on

this solved returned to the previous behavior where there is IPv4 DHCP only
