@jeder @mia @marcy yup! Once upon a time I came across some very old GSM phone that actually took a fullsize SIM. Like, the whole upper rear area of the device was a socket for it and it had these eject levers on the side you could slide up to pop the sim card back out like a slice of toast. Very weird looking handset. If I could remember the brand name I'd go looking for pics

@jeder @mia smartcards. most doctors have a KIR Szafir one in a reader on their desk (at least all in private healthcare providers). many business laptops have version with slots for them, and dell keyboards on universities for some reason often have a smartcard reader in them, albeit in disuse.

From what I can tell, SIM cards were originally just another type of smart card until they started getting miniaturized
