@novenary @jeder Redis is used as in memory DB... IDK why you couldn't just keep stuff in your own heap โ€‹02shrugโ€‹

@vavency @jeder @novenary so it survives when your server dies?

@jeder @novenary @vavency then you lose the speed of fetching from memory?

also thereโ€™s stuff like expiring time which is kinda handy for tokens or cache

@xarvos @novenary @vavency what's the point if redis isn't even faster than this solution

faster than querying postgres? i think it is? do you have benchmark proving otherwise?

@vavency @jeder @novenary you can't keep it in your own heap if you're nodejs or python and need to spawn multiple processes to have concurrency worth something

@vavency @jeder @novenary Redis is basically a distributed heap. No real reason to use it unless youโ€™re horizontally scaling your services.

@robby @vavency @jeder and yet by making it a hard dependency a lot of projects force the majority of users (who don't need horizontal scaling) to pay for the overhead

I don't think I've ever seen a case where scalability doesn't hurt the majority use-case
unless it's straight optimization, it's just a ballast of complexity

@novenary @vavency @jeder I agree, just saying why itโ€™s different from using a normal heap

@jeder isn't postgres much more memory-heavy than redis? never compared them, but i assumed that to be the case...
