@jeder Some of the best developers I've ever met never even got any formal education. Years of experience trump academic knowledge hundredfold.

It's also not "a thing everywhere". I haven't finished high school due to serious health issues, but learned everything on my own.

Currently working for 3rd corporation in my life on projects for EUC and NATO, nobody ever questioned my competences due to lack of (official) education.

The only company that was stubborn about it was Intel, as they told me to GTFO (even though their recruiter contacted me first lol). Other than that, I've had no issues finding jobs in any of 3 countries I lived in (so far).

The only reason why I'm considering getting a diploma is that I'd like to move to Japan and possibly Canada in the future (since I love traveling and learning about other cultures) - where you absolutely need a degree to even get a visa.

It's really weird to hear about Germany being "backwards" though since I'm having a blast each time I'm visiting. It seems clean, modern, safe, people are polite, food is great and so on blobcatgooglyshrug
