@mozilla you really make it hard for decent people to not switch to other browsers for good. At this point there's no other explanation than your managers being bribed by competitors.
@walsonde@mozilla Seriously. The web is inaccesssible. I'd wager a good 99% of content has ZERO alt text. This is an attempt to make that inaccessible content accessible.
How in the world is this "throwing people under the bus"? How is this "sabotaging accessibility"?
@privateger what Mozilla (and Google and stupid CEOs all over the world) calls ai for advertisment reasons is not ai and most certainly not capable of creating suiting alt text. If you want to know, how helpful "AI"-alt-text would be, go over to Google and use their ai search. This move, like everything Mozilla has done of lately, is done for pr reasons and not to improve ux. @mozilla
@walsonde@mozilla Not all AI is LLMs, Google Gemini has literally nothing to do with what's being discussed or implemented by Mozilla.
This is a vision transformer based approach. They're built on labelled images, with the express purpose of being able to understand image content. This tech already exists, and it's already being used.
I've attached two example images with generated alt text. I think that's a pretty good result. It didn't recognize the Cybertruck as being one, but it still got the main idea of the image across.
Certainly beats images being completely unlabelled and not understandable at all.
