I do not understand the point of the rumoured mid-gen refreshes for the PS5 and Series X.

The PS4 Pro and One X existed because their baseline consoles were constrained in some way in terms of horsepower, plus it helped both consoles move to 4K.

The PS5 and Xbox are not constrained at all for power. In fact, there isn't a game out there today that actually utilises the true power of each console, despite it being almost four years since their launch.

It gets even more redics when you consider that half of Sony's playerbase are still using the PS4, and that the next Call of Duty will be available for the PS4 and Xbox One — which came out 11 years ago!

You could have got a launch PS4 in secondary school and it could still be your primary gaming console now once you finished university, and there are still going to be games for it over the next two years.

Let's face it: the big bucks in gaming is for the average person now. You don't need 16 billion petaflops to play Fortnite, Call of Duty, Fifa, and watch Netflix. The old consoles do that just fine, and there's no real performance advantage to getting the newer consoles if that's all you want.

In addition, when you consider the huge install base of the last-gen consoles, of course developers are still going to target them, thus meaning that current-gen versions are basically upscaled versions to maintain a level of parity here.

There, to me, is no point in a mid-gen refresh when there isn’t even anything for the generation you’re refreshing.
