this is take 2 for the nas, this time with actually Modern and Power Efficient CPU and not some fucking prehistoric Nehalem power eater

ram arrived
waiting for: the case, and motherboard
will have to get sata cables after case arrives, and maybe fans and/or disk trays if they are missing

@jeder Seems nice. And probably will come out cheaper than buying something like Synology or QNAP... I wanted to build some NAS but for now it's on hold because I have to find some older parts so I can maybe utilize that old Pentium G4400T that I have laying around. (I think it would be enough for NAS... Maybe even overkill)

@sonicsong i already had 4 4tb drives I got for 1k in like Ages
that Nehalem shitbox costed me 150 so like, it wasn't Bad
and for this take I got a nice foam-filled case with lots of room for 80, this psu for like 300, 16gb ddr5 sodimm ram stick for 200, and a motherboard with embedded intel n100 for like 660 from ali

@sonicsong i got the N100 because it efficient and has a nice gpu for transcoding which I might not use, but it's very efficient

@jeder I was thinking not once about getting something like N100 but when counting how much I would have to spend then it made me not so happy. (I was on really tight budget.) Maybe now if I get info that I have job and will have enough to move out then maybe I will get myself something power efficient that would work as NAS or I will get parts for that G4400T. Also didn't boards with N100 could use M.2 to SATA so that you could use more drives?

@sonicsong this board I got has two m.2 slots and an open-ended pcie 3.0 x1 and so on all of them you could get like a SAS HBA or some shit, you probably wouldn't even saturate the x1 with the HBA even though all of the cheap-ish ones use pcie 2.0 x4 lmao

@jeder I have the same one for the same reason floofWoozy
It also handles Molex to SATA crimes very well

@jeder
no-name chinese ones. it doesn't really matter, it's a "dumb" connection.

the BIG thing to be aware of with Molex to SATA is that you have to buy crimped connectors,
not molded ones. the molded ones can be dangerous and short out after wear and tear, the crimped ones wont.

the crimped ones look like this (yes, i know thats a sata splitter):
