PCIe extended over .1 inch dupont cables. There are two adapter PCBs in use. One adapts the male PCIe card edge connector to .1 inch headers. The other board converts back from .1 inch headers to a PCIe slot.
The same adapter but this time inserted into a PC with a 10 gigabit network card connected to it. There is also a screen where the output of lspci for that card can be seen.

miniPCIe to flatflex cable adapter installed in the top half of a thinkpad below the keyboard. A long flatflex cable carrying PCIe signals snakes away from the adapter and disappears into the depths of the laptop. It is held down by two strips of off-brand kapton tape.
Bottom side of the same thinkpad. The flatflex cable disappearing into the depths of the device on the top reappears here, wrapping around one edge of the mainboard. The flatflex is plugged into a flatflex to M.2 Key E adapter. A Intel AX200 wireless card is plugged into the M.2 slot.
Screenshot of Linux running on the same laptop. Left side of the screen show statistics from the WiFi card connected to an access point. Right side of the screen show a file downloading at around 700 Mbit/s via WiFi. It is evident that the PCIe extension from top of the mainboard around it to the bottom of the mainboard works.
