@KaitlynEthylia@mikoto yes but it helps avoid a lot of the crap you don't log in with a youtube account, and public instances blend your watching habits in with other users, so the algorithm can't track you (you can also hide recommendations entirely) it has no ads and sponsorblock is integrated out of the box anti-features like autoplay are off by default it's generally a pretty nice experience for accessing youtube videos without using youtube directly
@novenary@mikoto I see, I've heard of the newpipe, the mobile app, don't know how related it is but I didn't have a particularly good experience with that
@KaitlynEthylia@mikoto it's only related in that they use the same library for extracting youtube data piped does it server-side though which allows them to respond quicker to changes without having to update the client app
also the newpipe devs' stance on sponsorblock is ridiculous
@xarvos@KaitlynEthylia@mikotohttps://newpipe.net/blog/pinned/newpipe-and-online-advertising/ basically the usual capitalist delusion that advertising is necessary, strongly opposing the idea that it's fundamentally malicious, and somehow using that as an excuse not to allow skipping ads in a niche client in a way that cannot be detected by advertisers it makes no sense at all
