connecting "smart home" wifi devices:
- you set the device into pairing mode, and after 30 minutes of wifi fuckery it works
- possibly spies on you
- doesn't spark joy
connecting zigbee/any other Proper Protocol devices:
- you set the device into pairing mode, and the Main Device and after less than a minute it Just Works
- it can't connect to internet
- sparks joy (if it has enough fucking signal)

@jeder Yeah, right. I have a Zigbee device that according to its manual is rated up to 60°C but stopped working when it got to 27°C last week.

It's current failure mode is that it communicates but always sends the same temperature, the one it was measuring at the time it was last re-paired. Not useful.

@jeder missing a crucial last step:
- randomly disassociates from your controller, requiring taking out the battery, pressing the single button for a specific but unspecified amount of time, and/or deleting it from your controller entirely and having to set everything back up exactly as it was before or things break in non-obvious ways

yeah I'm a bit annoyed

@lambda absolutely true, had one of these sonoff door sensors pull that out on me, only to figure out that it needed a new battery
