@pretendo@jame@splatoon considering we run a Matrix space, I don't honestly see it being feasible to run a space on Matrix when you have 55000 members on Discord. It's just going to be better to open things up bit by bit imo.
We can handle the 50 or so we have quite easily but I don't think we could handle 1 or 2 thousand (saying that, I don't ever need to moderate since the people in our community are so well behaved).
@jeder@splatoon@pretendo@splatoon I mean I self host my home server and dont Really have any issues joining large rooms. I'm in a few large rooms with no real problems (CalyxOS and the Louis Rossman rooms)
@splatoon@jeder@pretendo@splatoon@jame this. As someone who used a single user synapse server, I’d fear joining new matrix rooms due to the amount of loading required to even be able to see the latest message. I switched to running dendrite some time ago and it is definitely better but it’s not equivalent to synapse at all and I hear it performs worse at scale comparatively. Discord of course loads better but I think there’s just something neat about the small matrix homeserver. Nothing wrong with a simple discord bridge to matrix either, those work well and nothing will go away if it doesn’t work out.
@insert Development has been somewhat slowed on Dendrite. To my knowledge, many single-person homeservers use Conduit. There is also Conduwuit, the recent fork of that. @splatoon@pretendo Hosting a homeserver specifically for one space is not that necessary, however for effective moderation you do need Draupnir. See https://docs.draupnir.midnightthoughts.space for the non-selfhost option. The decryption issue is a bit overblown, but it is a good idea to avoid using matrix.org. And bridging is fine. @jeder@jame
We currently use matrix.org and I'm unable to self-host stuff in my current state (lack of Ethernet cabling for starters and leaving a computer running in the living room would be disruptive).
First time hearing about Draupnir, not going to install it though since I frankly don't remember the last time we've had to moderate something anyways. The community is incredibly well behaved!
1. Decentralization - you don't use mastodon.social for a reason, 2. It has all sorts of technical issues because of its myriad structure, and 3. The staff is barely responsive.
See https://servers.joinmatrix.org for a curated list of public homeservers. The filters and the user guide (on top) can narrow down a bit.
A space/room does not belong to a specific homeserver.
