they're reliable
it really depends, i have a thinkpad t495 with a quite bizarre loadout (ryzen 5 3500U and 40GB of RAM inside, and like, every single usb port used to its [almost] full potential, so a thinkpad "dock", 2 external displays and all that shit) and there were quite a few of kernel versions where it was very unstable, and most of it boiled down to amdgpu folks fucking something up that wasn't visible on a bare laptop and they only found out after a bunch of people that used thinkpad "docks" whined about it
