when you think about it mfm has the same problems of activitypub in a microcosm
poorly defined non-spec with a (comparatively) single reference implementation everyone tries being bug-for-bug compatible to with their own poorly defined extensions that's the wrong way to do something but has stuck due to legacy code and the few visible benefits it has to every other alternative
