Wait so why do people put batteries on trains when they can just run some cables along the tracks and get practically infinite power cirnothinking

@koakuma I'm not a giant train expert, but isn't what you're describing already the case?

Afaik electric trains just have some batteries for switching tracks and other moments when they are temporarily not connected to the overhead lines, they can't really run long distances on batteries alone.

@SuperDicq @koakuma i think they mean putting batteries instead of diesel, which then, yeah why not just electrify everything

@jeder @SuperDicq Exactly, I see news about things like battery locomotives and pure BEV lines (like that Giga Train meme line) and it's so baffling to me why would people do that when they can run some cables and tap power directly from the grid instead of carrying lots of dangerous consumables on board blobcatpeekaboo

@koakuma @SuperDicq like, the usual excuse is that getting electrification is "expensive" (which is false, using diesels/batteries is more expensive in the long run) and hard to build (which is true, regulations are a fuck)
