@puniko hmm yeah I guess that model would be a bit overspecced for my usecase and price range... I am still thinking if I should go for a 4-bay Synology or diy a nas - the base hardware for it would be there, but it probably would be very inefficient
@jeder@puniko yeah, but the old Dell T3500 I have laying around has like a 800W? (Maybe it is also "just" 500W) psu and I don't know how efficient it is... (I also haven't tested it's regular power usage, so maybe my worries are unjustified)
@MagicLike@puniko the psu wattage doesn't mean anything besides the fact that it has that much "capacity", t3500 is nehalem iirc so it's kinda bad power efficiency wise nowadays
@jeder yeah, but the wattage could mean that some shit in there has the power of going near that capacity, which is what I meant :3 what I thought, but I at least have 24 Gigs of RAM for it
@MagicLike idk how's t3500 but t7500 can be upgraded with a daughterboard that has another lga 1366 socket and 6 more ram slots, and since lga 1366 cpus can go to like 130w tdp, there's the reason
@MagicLike anyway, i'd not do the nas on the base of that dell, because my dell has sas-1 controller integrated and it can't do more than 2tb per drive, so you have 4 sata ports without possibility of maxxing them out like ever
@jeder yeah I eill keep a look out, apparently my t3500 has 7 SATA ports and space for 4 drives when you remove the optical drive and the "flexbay" (never heard of it before) so maybe the controller can do better (I am looking into installing 8TB Drives in a RAID-Z1)
@MagicLike yeah so it's pretty much what i have, and so yeah you will need a controller because t3500 is essentially a downscaled t7500, and it also comes with that sas-1 controller
@jeder I also have a chance of getting my hands on a HP Proliant ML110 G7 (I know HP 🙄, but it is free) - the manual says something about a limit, but does not specify anything. Do youknow something about it's controller?
