@MagicLike keep in mind that this is a workstation so they are giving huge PSUs for a reason

@MagicLike my (not really working) dell t7500 has a 1000w and there's nothing really inside that would currently suck up that much power

@MagicLike idk how's t3500 but t7500 can be upgraded with a daughterboard that has another lga 1366 socket and 6 more ram slots, and since lga 1366 cpus can go to like 130w tdp, there's the reason

@jeder I haven't seen any possibility nor space for a daughterboard (yet), but maybe the amount of pcie slots would explain the high wattage...

@MagicLike anyway, i'd not do the nas on the base of that dell, because my dell has sas-1 controller integrated and it can't do more than 2tb per drive, so you have 4 sata ports without possibility of maxxing them out like ever

@MagicLike sure, you can just plop in a hba controller or something but like, this is supposed to be on the cheap right

@MagicLike but for the price of 4 drive synology you still could get something way better tbh

@jeder yeah I eill keep a look out, apparently my t3500 has 7 SATA ports and space for 4 drives when you remove the optical drive and the "flexbay" (never heard of it before) so maybe the controller can do better (I am looking into installing 8TB Drives in a RAID-Z1)

@MagicLike yeah so it's pretty much what i have, and so yeah you will need a controller because t3500 is essentially a downscaled t7500, and it also comes with that sas-1 controller

@MagicLike like, the 2tb limit is architectural limit of sas-1 for some goddamn reason

@jeder I also have a chance of getting my hands on a HP Proliant ML110 G7 (I know HP 🙄, but it is free) - the manual says something about a limit, but does not specify anything. Do youknow something about it's controller?

@jeder a few weeks ago I wrote with sb and they told me that those limits are only in place if the controller is in RAID mode, if set to HBA there should theoretically be no limits
