Oh yeah I've fucked around and found that one of the two SATA ports on the thing I wanted to use as a NAS is borked.
If I connect a drive with the OS to it, sometimes it starts booting but it just freezes when loading the ramdisk, the other port works fine.
I'm wondering if this is just a problem with the connector, I'm pretty sure I have the tools to replace a SATA slot (hot air rework station), although idk if that's worth the effort, and I'm not confident in my ability to not burn the PCB before I desolder something like that.
The thing has a gigabyte GA-M52LT-D3 motherboard, which only has one 16x PCIE slot, two 1x PCIE slots, and 4 PCI slots.
Currently the 16x slot is taken up by a gpu, and the 1x slots are taken up by a 1Gbps NIC and a 2xSATA2 controller.
So I'm wondering if I could find some addin card that would do SATA2 over PCI, I seem to be able to find plenty of 4xSATA1 PCI cards, but nothing that would do like idk, 2xSATA2 over PCI.
I would go for like a SAS HBA, I saw one online that can do 4xSATA2, but it uses PCIEx4, so the problem is, how the fuck do I see the screen so I can configure that without a GPU?
Like I run the thing headless anyway so no GPU is normally not a problem but if I need a screen to configure the HBA then it's suddenly a problem.
