@jeder someone should do "electron but it has sane versioning so you can reliably dynamically link to the system version rather than bundle it with every app" and that'll be the best thing ever
arg0 of electron takes the path to an unpacked or packed app.asar.
what i have set up in my gentoo overlay is literally unpacking electron to /usr/share/electron/{version} and then dumping app asars in /usr/share/electron/apps/{name} and it works really well.
@ada@jeder while yes you can do it, there's also the insanity of electron apparently introducing breaking changes to native api parts and everyone just having to Deal With It
the meme of discord using an old electron version (which they don't do now funnily enough) came from them maintaining an old version because their native parts kept breaking all of the time
@halva@jeder discord modified the electron source code (for some reason), electron itself stays relatively stable (all electron apps i've packaged use anywhere from between electron 27 and electron 31, they're all running on electron 33 perfectly fine)
it's less of an electron issue and more of a "developer thinks they're clever" issue
@halva@jeder projects like wails kind of do this by using the system's native webview instead (webview2 on Windows, gtk webview on Linux and whatever it was called on Android, iOS and MacOS)
@mstar@jeder tauri does the same, it's literally the reason why it's so comically janky xd
ultimately most apps bundle chromium in one way (electron) or another (cef) because it's supported everywhere that matters and has consistent behavior no matter what setup it runs on
