I feel like fedi is obsessed with mastodon. I get people’s frustration with the project and the lack of progress. I get the hesitation to move to something different. I think it’s worth it though. By working on software that has better features (especially mod tooling) you can improve fedi. If it picks up enough traction it absolutely can influence mastodon. I don’t see Eugen accepting defeat and allowing other implementations to overshadow mastodon on user experience. Eventually people will pester the project and go "well x and y software have it, why can’t we?". If mastodon isn’t willing to accommodate what the people need then it’s time to move on instead of accepting its limitations. This has happened countless times in the open source community. Things like neovim branching off of vim. I’m sick of seeing people accept defeat because "mastodon won’t support it".

@jeder quotes are in forks of mastodon, and a variety of other software. We need more than just quotes to incentivize people to move off of mastodon.

@jeder I think mod tooling, especially the type that projects like letterbook are wanting to work on are a damn good incentive especially for instance operators.
