I know there are many easy ways to get human curated, correct, subtitles for most movies and TV shows but if only there was a way to burn the rain forest for somewhat incorrect subtitles

My friend has a great take on this: "What if I can't find the subtitles online because I ripped an old VHS tape"

That's the most esoteric bullshit reason I've ever heard, man. I just gave you a solution for 99% of use cases that doesn't involve wasting a ton of power and your gave me this?

@rune how is that a great take
first of all, it runs locally so like, it's not even using any more power than you would use
second of all, it's subtitling and translating real time

@jeder using more cpu on your computer is in fact using more power.

I don't see the point in comparing it to anything other than the obvious: It uses orders of magnitude more power than to download a subtitle file from opensubtitles.org, which would probably be able to solve almost all uses of the AI feature

@rune it's still hundreds of magnitudes less than burning through a rainforest
and also this is not targeting the same niche as open subtitles but something entirely else that is stuff that is not going to get translated
tbh opensubtitles are also mostly bad because they will be almost always out of sync

@rune so like, I see this being used in mostly anime raws that don't have subtitles yet (or maybe they do but not in a language someone understands), or like youtube-dl'ed shit

@rune I use audio transcription on my phone (which according to Google is local and offline if anyone is to believe them) for few languages and it's doing quite a good job so like, if something like this would get into vlc I would absolutely use it
