It is weird to read how Framework is so cool because it has these switchable expansion cards (which is how all ports are done, including the charging port), and 4 slots for them, which is a lot and let's people to connect so many devices at once, much better than all the other laptops!
Meanwhile my Thinkpad from 2023: two USB-C ports, two USB-A, one RJ45, one HDMI, one 3.5mm... seven total. And yes, they're not switchable, but they provide everything I might need (except for SD maybe).

@IngaLovinde oh hey i think my T480 has the exact same layout

only thing i feel it lacks is more USB-A at times

while i like the idea of modules for actual hardware like drives or card readers or GPUs or whatever, for ports it feels like just unnecessary complexity so they can say the thing is more modular

@sinewave T480 also has a memory card reader; so that's eight Framework expansion cards (2x USB-C, 2x USB-A, HDMI, Ethernet, 3.5mm, and SD).

But hey, Framework gives you a choice! (A choice you wouldn't need with a Thinkpad)

@IngaLovinde @sinewave imo problem with that is that oftentimes you do not need one thing and would rather have something else, like, I'd want two display outputs in the laptop instead of like, an SD card reader or USB-A because it's easier and cheaper for me to get more USB hubs with no DisplayPort Alt-Mode than with it

@IngaLovinde @sinewave not to mention that card readers in some laptops are utter dogshit (my T495 has a microSD card reader and I use pretty much exclusively full size SD cards, and even then, microSD cards do not click or get stuck in there, therefore it is of no use for me)

@jeder @sinewave T480 specifically has full size reader.

But yeah, I guess driving two external displays over HDMI is one case where framework connectivity is better than Thinkpad's. As long as you're okay with only having one port left (with three being occupied by HDMI and a charger)
