hot take, small rant I hate flatpak and docker, like if you can run something bare metal, do it - don't try to package a whole system and ship shit onto other machines.

When I am installing software, Flatpaks are the absolute last resort. I mean they are nice in the sense that the creator can be sure shit works, but every flatpak has to ship it's own graphics driver for example and so many compatibility layers that the users system just gets bloated with so much shit that is already installed.
And we don't talk about docker here, nobody needs a NAT in a NAT with the same software installed in a container which already runs on the root system - that's what Linux users are for, and what reverse proxies manage.

They have played us for absolute fools

Hard disagree. Migrating bare metal installs is a pure nightmare and I don't wish it on anyone. State everywhere.

I will install things like Postgres bare metal because they can use SIMD, Huge Pages, and other things, but anything else? Fuck no woozy_blahaj

both solutions have its cons, and I’m gonna use both for different things.
baremetal stuff sucks because you have to figure out how to set it up. this can be effortless if the maintainer put in the work, or suck if they didn’t.
flatpak is one of the ways that maintainers put work to make stuff work
still, flatpak sucks ass for small applications, and for console stuff. launching shit shouldn’t require me to remember an arcane invocation including a reverse domain name like it’s a fucking java classpath
docker sucks ass even more, because you’re pulling random images built by someone with god knows what practices. also it’s largely centralized (yay for when AWS breaks or sth)

i don’t feel like all the pros and cons could even be weighed in a single post like this. shit is just complicated and not black / white

re: hot take, small rant @domi @privateger @MagicLike yes, flatpak does suck for cli usage, HOWEVER, I still prefer that over having to decipher whatever debian packages map to in fedora or arch because it's never 1:1 and developer/doc writer couldn't be arsed to do that themselves

no? in this case this doesn't have any difference from flatpaks where you also have these, outside of official images, which I use pretty much exclusively (and, well, lsio images because they save ass sometimes)

re: hot take, small rant @jeder @privateger @MagicLike it has largely normalized the pipeline of going to hubdockercom -> searching for an image -> picking a random one -> getting malware. it’s a bit better nowadays (through moderation), but it still isn’t impossible to just hide a part of the process / modify the transparency log that they generate for each image
