I'm very upset that nixos only supports its custom firewall module and I can't just run Firewalld on it (also that it randomly flushes the firewall when applying the config instead of yknow, just flushing its own rule table. this breaks all running containers' networking btw.)

Overall like, NixOS wants you to use nix for everything and if it cannot do what you want then it wants you to become a NixOS developer. I don't wanna be a NixOS developer! Especially when all the docs assume I already understand all the other docs!

And I don't wanna vendor-lock all my configs to NixOS!

Now, I still do a bunch of stuff in the system config because I actually really like having all the core system configuration in one place. Like, you're telling me I can just plop this on another machine and have the same configuration? Fuck yes!

But yeah NixOS is just a lot of suffering. Especially if you're not religiously commited to doing everything with Nix, because then you're going against the flow.

I just want a consistent base operating system to run my services on and then dealing with Nix can be a paaaain.

To its credit, I've never had a system update break shit so far, and I've done like 3 or 4 version updates by now. That is quite impressive.

I just disliked getting hooked onto one system that manages everything for me
It is kinda comfortable that when I need to change computers I can just move my config and it mostly works, but for me tbh NixOS is more like just OS with built in advanced dotfiles + packages.txt support
(also FHS is Filesystem Hierarchy Standard, the thing where Linux sets that binaries are in /usr/bin etc, some stuff not provided by Nixpkgs can break because NixOS is not FHS compatible by default and programs might try to search for libraries in folders that don't exist/don't contain the thing it searches for/which have different name than NixOS set)

At least when I was more into creating my own packages it was more like messed up PKGBUILD/APKBUILD than fully-fledged language under the hood
And it’s still like this, see literaly any package in the nixpkgs
