Context: stepmania (usually called ITG for In The Groove because that was the first really mainstream popular stepmania fork) is still going strong. If you did not have the specific flavor of brain worms I did growing up, it's a way to play DDR with custom songs and charts.
One of the more niche but extremely popular forms is "Stamina." Stamina charts will have relatively easy, repeating patterns of notes. But it will have a lot of them. Like....an hour of max BPM foot stomping lot of them. Stamina is a play style that's not based on getting the highest score or a perfect combo on every chart, but is instead a combination fitness activity and, well, stamina test. You play the fastest, longest song that you can handle, keep playing past the point to where your legs are screaming and you've been at peak heartrate for long enough to kill a victorian orphan, and once you clear the song you post about it online and record things like max bpm, max steps per second, and some people will hook up a heart monitor to show their heartrate the whole time.
This has caused an arms race of making pads that are easy to activate and require as little movement as possible. People will lube up the center of their mat, or cover it in baby powder and then play while wearing swim shoes that themselves have socks pulled over them for maximum slide and support, or they'll play on small custom made mats, or a foam mat that they've chopped the sensors out of to place closer to the center.
And then there's Yuzu, a top level Stamina player. His dance mat is made from about 30 pressure sensors sandwiched in between layers of yugioh cards and covered in tape.
