@lightyisreal "the fedi" (as in the protocol layer itself) has no problems with that. mastodon just made some bad decisions early on in it's life that makes it difficult for them to implement it. (and a surprising chunk of software copied those without thinking)
other software do have handle changes and mastodon will actually handle it for remote accounts, just can't do it for local accounts
@jeder@lightyisreal same (well, unsure if any of them handle remote changes) with gotosocial, lemmy, and an embarassing amount of other software (surprisingly, except misskey)
