never great signal (honestly sometimes i wonder how GSM-R gets through? maybe they have dedicated infrastructure for it, which would be the sensible choice)

(onboard wifi is even worse since its 1 4g connection shared between the entire train, plus it probably has QoS for the onboard infrastructure to get priority)

vodafone is decent though at least (better than three anyway, although thats a bar low enough to take out the ankles of every infrastructure operator that isnt hutchinson 3g uk ltd)

@CauseOfBSOD @yassie_j I suppose they have their own infra instead of relying on carriers to do a good job because you can't rely on them ever having infra around railways

@jeder @yassie_j govt could possibly force them to do it (kinda like how some mobile networks havent dropped 2g yet because communication and navigation systems in ambulances still rely on it to get dispatch info) but it would make more sense for network rail to install their own infrastructure rather than having to pester (insert infra operator) to cover specific spots properly

also they wouldnt have to compromise on equipment upgrades (especially since gsm-r is a european standard and is thus probably still binding in the uk, especially given that some non-eurostar trains still use HS1 as part of their routes)
