@mirabilos@grizeldi UK has a long history of retrofitting safety features into ancient trains (they already have AWS train protection, proper speedometers, central door locking, etc).
In theory the heritage/railtour business is pretty big, but a lot of these safety upgrades seem to be subsidised...
@mirabilos@grizeldi thankfully we didn't Brexit from ETCS. We even have a small section of ETCS with ATO. But upgrading the rest is going pretty slowly.
@russss@mirabilos@grizeldi I think the UK is going to get to it faster than e.g. Germany just because the UK is mostly doing wholesale replacements as opposed to side by side support with the existing signalling system
@erincandescent@russss@grizeldi@mirabilos That's mostly because we sidestepped ATP in the 90s and installed the stopgap TPWS...and never addressed the tech debt. So there's no existing supervisory control system to operate alongside, as is the case with LZB etc.
@hugh@mirabilos@russss@grizeldi@erincandescent I mean we sidestepped KHP (it was supposed to be PL cab signalling in the 80s/90s but didn't work out) because ETCS was already looming and instead we didn't get anything, even a stopgap, and so we are stuck with extremely safe SIFA + signal acknowledge with no way of detecting a SPAD other than by signaller stopping every train on the radio channel with one button, and are waiting for ETCS which was supposed to be fully rolled out by first plans but it's barely going
