took a look at Matter devices and it's honestly worse than proprietary solutions

look at zigbee, the vendor cannot have the device access the internet so it always returns all data over zigbee

now with matter, it only has a very limited set of specific properties defined in the protocol, so a manufacturer will plaster the device with "Matter compatible, works with every smart home system imaginable!", and then half of the features aren't available over Matter and instead need some proprietary app because the manufacturer had the escape hatch of using some cloud server for the real functionality and Matter is just a marketing gimmick

so yeah, Matter is worse than nothing, because it claims to be a solution to interoperability while actually only being a half-baked pretend-solution

the main thing that makes ZigBee good is that the devices cannot talk to the internet, Matter just makes it all run over IPv6 which would be cool technically if all the standards weren't behind an NDA and if it actually solved the "I want to control shit over my LAN" problem

Edit 2:
Ikea devices didn't replace Zigbee with MoT, rather their new zigbee hub is also a Matter bridge or something like that.
