I tried Mumble last night with a friend, I ran into a few snags that were disappointing:
- Their website and github only provides binaries for Mac and Windows. Linux relies on distribution packages which is fine, but Ubuntu's Apt were outdated (typical lol), Snap was also outdated, I resorted to Flatpak which worked fine. Would be nice to have a elf or something if possible.
- My friend couldn't connect to the server, the button was just greyed out. We figured out this was because it couldn't poll the server and thought it was offline, which was just poor UI. The reason he couldn't conect was either an IPv6 thing (I was hosting it over IPv4 only) or it was his VPN, we fixed it by entering the IP directly instead of domain name. Later the domain worked too, don't know why.
- I found the microphone setup kinda confusing, the sliders weren't as intuitive as Discord. I think they are probably better/offer more control, but it was another onboarding hurdle.
- Finally, my friend's mic didn't work, I don't know why, we got bored and stopped.
Anyway I rate Mumble 9/10 for voice chat services, do try it out. Server setup for a quick demo was very easy, quick docker spinup.
