It truly is fucked that for local public transport, physical tickets cost more than digital tickets in Vienna.

Even the yearly Vienna subscription.

@navi I guess tvms and paper are a significantly larger maintenance headache than Aztec or whatever

@lilylunatic in fact maybe abolish local public transport tickets in total but that's beyond the scope of this

@navi Thereโ€™s potentially a sociological argument for symbolic ticket fares and there are a while lot of different situations and approaches to the question of โ€žhow do we ticket touristsโ€œ. Either leaning towards attracting tourism or taxing tourism for its infrastructure use.

@lilylunatic @navi in Poland whenever someone gets the idea of free buses, the network enters a freefall and it almost always happens

@lilylunatic @navi like, I am very much for low ticket prices but I can't really support free public transport after seeing how many polish cities deal with it

@jeder @navi I guess part of the way to go is subsidies for the active population- so students, kids, disabled ppl, working population

@lilylunatic @navi yea, you could've noticed some (if not all) big polish cities are doing like, subsidised monthly/yearly tickets for working citizens if they are paying PIT taxes in that city, but I think this is very flawed on its own, because as poland doesn't know about german/czech-style way of doing multi-municipal transit authorities, commuters from outside that city can't use those despite doing pretty much the same thing as intra-city commuters (or they are changing their tax residency for this just to have that, which on the other hand is bad for their actual living place)
benefits for other groups are a common place already without this, although in very polish way, you need to have a student id on you to actually use it because fuck you
