pirates on soulseek restricting their downloads to automatically ban leechers who don't share music back, like- isn't the whole point of piracy to provide for those who cannot afford? for those who don't have the bandwidth, the stability of a permanent shelter, to buy and share like you do?

if you're sharing pirated media under the condition that for the privilege of accessing your files, users must share just as much as you do, you are not sharing. you are putting arbitrary conditions on access to the creations of others, that you have not made. you are behaving like a streaming platform. stop it.

everyone should have access to entertainment. sharing and uploading is about using your own privilege for the benefits of those less fortunate, so that they can enjoy the same things you do, no matter their conditions. limit your bandwidth if you need, have a restrictive queue if you must, but gatekeeping has no place in piracy.

@illyBytes some clients, like Nicotine+, which is widely used, allow setting up an automatic block: so if someone tries to download stuff from that one, its client look at their shares, and if it doesn't meet a configured threshold of shared files, the client blocks that user from downloading from that one

I don't get why people worry about this. I know a lot of people use it, because when I download things, I often automatically get a "user_xxx is browsing your shared files" the moment i start a download from user_xxx. I share enough that it has never been a problem, but like,, yeah if you're worried about people downloading stuff from you,, just throttle your upload speed more aggressively or reduce your queue size, don't just go banning people like that >w< it's wild

this goes for torrents too btw, i think private trackers with a ratio system suck (tho they also do for other reasons, like turning ratio into a currency you can buy from them for money, and ofc being private)
