such as: fully free public transport schemes will mostly just end up killing the system altogether and instead you'd be better off with heavily discounted network-wide tickets (this includes stuff like a cheap yearly subscription that gives you huge discounts for long distance single travel tickets, i do love ÖBB fares in this regard alright, they can get bonkers)
@ielenia@kuriko yeah we don't have anything like light rail here unless I guess trams/streetcars are like that here train=heavy rail no matter if intercity of commuter and tbh this whole matter is mostly just a matter of trusting the passengers and not being greedy wankers the more authorities trust them, they go for simpler solutions like proof of payment or train conductor roaming the train checking and selling the tickets if they are a bunch of greedy wankers wanting to maximise profits, they'll go for fare gates
@ielenia@kuriko about all modes actually, I have seen trains with validators in Warsaw and it works well there but as I said, people usually buy their tickets way before boarding the train (or actually inside the train from the conductor if they couldn't buy it otherwise), and conductor will validate them when going through the train all of our trams have validators on board etc etc in Berlin or Vienna you have validator lines similar to fare gates but without the gates obviously, and ticket cops will just ambush them
putting them on the vehicles would slow the boarding process
never seen that happen and almost all of our systems are like that, you just have a validator next to every door, and people will validate after departing
@ielenia@kuriko it doesn't stop them from just making a line similar to fare gate but with normal validators instead, and some of them on the platform, or just, you know, having them inside the vehicles
